Former world number one Andy Murray continues to win hard and hard to have clear wins on the circuit, so is Indian Wells too. The British tennis player wins against the Japanese Taro Daniel and thus celebrates yet another record of a glittering career, the achievement of 700 victories in the ATP circuit, a number that few athletes have conquered.
In the post race Murray explained the significance of this success and also commented on his current moment. Here are his statements: “Getting this record really means a lot to me, when I see tennis players who are between 700 and 800 career wins, I can say that most of them are among the best of the last 40 years.
Being in this group is very nice, there are athletes I idolized when I was little and others I know who are among the best in history. When you play you don’t think about numbers, but now at the point of my career I would like to reach 800 victories on the circuit.
I feel proud of my achievements and the victories I have won, I remember that I participated in a particularly difficult era.” During the conference Murray talked about his records and wanted to point out several things.
Andy explained: “The greatest satisfaction of my career was becoming number one in the world, I think it was one of the turning points. I hit 600 wins in Cincinnati in 2016,
so it took about five and a half years to do.
100 wins and when you think about these things you look at the numbers and find further motivation to win even more games. The turning point of my career? In 2012 between Wimbledon and the Olympics I made a very important transition.
When you see the Big Three notice that Federer beat Philippousis in his first Grand Slam, Rafael Nadal beat Puerta and Novak beat Tsonga, all players with little or no experience in the Grand Slam finals.”
Annacone reflects on Rafa Nadal
Renowned coach and analyst Paul Annacone has praised Rafael Nadal’s ability on all surfaces and described his start to the year as a “great story.”
Annacone also analyzed why the conditions at the Indian Wells Masters are an excellent fit for the World No. 4’s game. “And most importantly, he is so confident,” Annacone said. “Looking at those numbers: 25 times a titlist on hardcourts.
It gets tiring to talk to people because they say – ‘he is one-dimensional, he was just so dominant on the clay.’ This guy can play on everything. And to see him at 35 years of age, this confident, starting a year 15-0 – I just think it’s a great story.”
He won the Melbourne Summer Set ATP 250 event and the Australian Open in January, before claiming the Mexican Open ATP 500 title in Acapulco last month. “I think the conditions are great for Rafa here,” Annacone said.
“It’s a gritty court. The ball grabs the court, goes through the court a little bit slower once it hits the court, but faster through the air. Which means spin is going to be exacerbated, which means that’s problems for the other guys on the other side of the net because the ball is going to grab and jump. And we know how well he moves.”
