Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have registered to play at the 122nd U.S. Open in Brookline, Mass.
Registering for the event does not mean that either one will play, however. Wednesday was the deadline for players interested in playing the event to register. Woods, coming off his worst showing at the Masters, will be more selective in the events he plays following a February 2021 car crash.
Indeed, Woods was noncommittal about playing in the PGA Championship next month, confirming only that he would play in the British Open (which will be held this year at St. Andrews). He did not mention the U.S. Open specifically when asked when he would golf next.
“I won’t be playing a full schedule ever again,” Woods said after the Masters (via the PGA Tour). “So it’ll be just the big events. I don’t know if I’ll play Southern Hills (site of this year’s PGA) or not.”
“I am looking forward to St. Andrews, and so that’s something that is near and dear to my heart and I’ve won two Opens there,” Woods said. “It’s my favorite golf course in the world, so I will be there for that one. But anything in between that, I don’t know.”
Mickelson has not played in a PGA Tour event since the Farmers Insurance Open in late January. His last international event came at the Saudi International in February.
Mickelson has been absent from the PGA Tour and other international events since the golfer received backlash in February over comments he made about the Saudi-backed Super Golf League in an interview with Alan Shipnuck as part of an “unauthorized” biography.
“They’re scary motherf—rs” to get involved with,” Mickelson said in the interview. “We know they killed (Washington Post reporter and U.S. resident Jamal) Khashoggi and have a horrible record on human rights. They execute people over there for being gay. Knowing all of this, why would I even consider it? Because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour operates.”
Mickelson missed the Masters for the first time in 28 years in 2022. Tournament organizers said they did not disinvite him, but rather that he texted them a month in advance to say he had no intentions of playing.
