In a recent interview with RTS, Marc Rosset expressed his desire to see Roger Federer again for at least another season. He said: “I would like Roger Federer to have a full last season in 2023. That would be great, but I don’t know how possible that is.
Roger is working hard to recover from yet another knee surgery, it’s not easy at his age. As far as I’m concerned, what matters most is Federer’s happiness. Whatever decision he makes, I will be happy for him.”
Interviewed by Tennis Deutschland, Christopher Clarey analyzed the prospects of the Swiss: “Roger came within one point of winning Wimbledon the last time he was really healthy. He thinks he has one last chance in London if he gets back in good shape.
On paper, he didn’t go badly last year either, having reached the quarterfinals despite a precarious condition. I doubt he can do better than that, there are too many opponents in his path. However, it is always difficult to bet against Federer.”
Roger Federer’s come back
Roger Federer is doing his utmost to treat himself to one last ride before retiring. The Swiss champion had tried a timid return last year, but things had not gone well. Suffice it to say that the King played just 13 official matches in 2021, collecting nine wins and four losses.
The round of 16 at Roland Garros and the quarterfinals at Wimbledon were his best seasonal results, a far too meager booty for a legend of his caliber. A few weeks after the Championships, the former world number 1 announced that he had suffered a relapse in his right knee and had to operate for the third time in 18 months.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion hopes to return in late summer or early autumn, perhaps for the Laver Cup (which will take place at the O2 Arena in London from 23 to 25 September). Roger was forced to overtake Rafael Nadal in the all-time rankings of the Majors, while Novak Djokovic snatched the record for weeks at the top of the ATP rankings.
