RAFAEL NADAL CONTINUES HIS SOLID RUN

If there were any worries about Nadal’s foot injury issues, they seem to have been laid to rest in the first two rounds here at Roland-Garros. After dropping just six games in his rout of Jordan Thompson in the first round, the Spaniard got the better of Corentin Moutet in the second in another straight-setter. Nadal needed just over two hours to get the Frenchman, winning 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 but it did see him drop his serve on two different occasions.

Both of it came in the third set, by when the Spaniard was already two sets – falling 2-0 down at one stage and then failing to serve it out at 5-3. Nadal quickly recovered to break his opponent in the very next game to wrap things up.

What Nadal will look to change is the number of unforced errors, which he clocked at 22 over the three sets. The 27 winners helped but as he grows into better rhythm, the former world number one will hope to slowly shed off some of the wariness around his foot injury.

VAN DE ZANDSCHULP GETS PAST INJURED FOGNINI
The manner in which van de Zandschulp had struggled to get past the 141st-ranked Pavel Kotov in his first round, there were doubts how he would manage against a much more experienced and better-pedigreed opponent in the second.

Fabio Fognini is a Masters 1000 winner but van de Zandschulp got his act together well and lived up to his favourites billing to race off to a two sets to love lead.

Fognini lasted five more games in the third set before opting to retire from the encounter because of an injury.

The match lasted two hours with van de Zandschulp overcoming a break of serve in the opening set to break Fognini two times in a row to clinch it.The second set was tougher for van de Zandschulp as he fell 5-1 down before mounting a comeback of the day. He won the next five games, saving two set-points in the process before completing the win in the tie-breaker. Can van de Zandschulp show a similar kind of grit against Nadal though?

Bedene entered the tournament with not in a good form but Slovakia seemed to have earned his shape back with some strong serves. On the other hand, Serb, Djokovic didn’t drop a set while he clinched the Italian Open title, thought-out the tournament. The pick of the match is Novak Djokovic as he is better in the form to be able to progress to the next round. This will be the fourth meeting between both players, with Djokovic winning on each of the three previous occasions.

They have met twice on clay, at the Rome Masters in 2017 and here at Roland Garros with Djokovic winning in straight sets each time. After what has been a difficult few months for the world number one primarily due to reasons off the court, it has been a very good comeback by Novak Djokovic. The early part of the clay season saw Djokovic struggle but slowly and surely he has continued to get back to old form.

A crucial title win in Rome week before last where the world number one looked to be getting back to himself set the foundation for Ronald Garros and the defending champion here has carried it forward.

Opening the defense of his title against Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka, there were some tight moments early on, but once Djokovic got his ‘pop’ going, there was no stopping him. Dropping only four games in his opener, the Serb played Alex Molcan of Slovakia, who is currently being coached by Marian Vajda who Djokovic parted ways with recently.
