The Halle Open continues on Wednesday afternoon in Germany. After Germany hosted the Stuttgart Open, now it’s Halle’s turn on the grass. Matteo Berrettini won the Stuttgart Open after returning to the court following a hand injury.
He opted to play in London at the Queen’s Club Championship for a chance of scenery. The world No. 1 was flying into Germany while Berrettini was leaving. As a result of the points drop from last, Novak Djokovic was bumped to No. 3 on the ATP Tour.
No disrespect to Medvedev, who is opening his Halle Open quest today, but he has to improve his form this season before I slot the Russian into the top spot. That being said, Medvedev has the talent to flip a switch and make a deep run. He will not be able to participate at Wimbledon, though.
He is coming off a loss in the final round against Tim van Rijthoven in a tremendous upset in the Netherlands. Medvedev was rolling and a heavy favorite to beat the Dutchman. However, van Rijthoven protected his homecourt and upset Medvedev, 4-6, 1-6.
The best way to beat Medvedev is to have him second-guess himself and lose confidence. That’s exactly what his opponent was able to accomplish early on in his last match.
He will play his Round of 32 match against David Goffin. Goffin is the No. 39 player on the ATP Tour looking to pressure Medvedev into another upset this afternoon.

Daniil Medvedev vs. David Goffin Prediction:
David Goffin has an upset in him if Medvedev comes out in the same form as he did in the final round in the Netherlands. Goffin won two matches in the French Open, but lost in straight sets to Hubert Hurkacz, 5-7, 2-6, 1-6.
He played one of his best matches of the year against Rafael Nadal in the Madrid Open. As a heavy underdog, Goffin forced a third set for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-7 loss. Despite falling, Goffin played well in that tournament to get to the Round of 16.
Goffin is 13-4 in his last five years on a grass surface. He was 3-2 in 2021, with his first grass match this year coming against Medvedev.
Daniil Medvedev is 2-1 over Goffin, with a 7-6, 6-4 win in their most recent meeting in the ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati in 2019. That was a good effort from Goffin, though Medvedev has improved his game since then.
Daniil Medvedev has won his sets 25-11 on the grass since 2021. He lost to Goffin at Wimbledon in 2019, but expect him to be better focused.
It’s unlikely to see Medvedev play two matches in a row. The Russian hasn’t been at his best this year, but he’s usually dependable when he’s asked to have a response. I’m backing Medvedev in a 6-4, 6-3 win to cover in his opener at the Halle Open.
