Serena Williams will play at the National Bank Open with the full entry list confirmed now on the WTA side as well as the ATP side for the traditional US Open warm-up tournament in Canada.
Williams will play at the National Bank Open for the first time since 2019 where she had to retire in the final against at the time rising star and future US Open champion, Bianca Andreescu.
Returning recently at Wimbledon at the age of 40 but losing to Harmony Tan, she hinted at the time to playing at Flushing Meadows but with this warm-up now confirmed it seems that is now a reality.
“When you’re at home, especially in New York, and the US Open, that being the first place I’ve won a Grand Slam, is something that’s always super special,” Williams said. “Your first time is always special.
“It definitely makes me want to hit the practice courts because you’re playing not bad and you’re so close,” Williams added. “Any other opponent probably would have suited my game better. So, yeah, I feel like that it’s actually kind of like, ‘OK, Serena, you can do this if you want.’ ”
