ROGER FEDERER has not played competitive tennis since Wimbledon 2021.

Roger Federer is unlikely to play at the Laver Cup this year after suffering a setback in his return from injury, according to reports. The tennis icon has apparently suffered a recurrence to the knee issue that has kept him out of action since Wimbledon 2021.

Federer has not played competitively since his heavy defeat by Hubert Hurkacz on Centre Court last year. He is due to return when tennis stars play at the Laver Cup in October.

The 41-year-old released footage of a training session in mid-August in a major hint that he will make his long-awaited comeback. It came more than a year after the 20-times Grand Slam champion revealed he would be undergoing a third surgery on his right knee.

However, that return to fitness at the Laver Cup now seems unlikely as Federer’s recovery has hit a fresh obstacle. Reports from people close to Federer suggest that he has suffered a devastating setback in his quest to play again.

According to Swiss publication Tages Anzeiger, Federer had liquid in his right knee again and it has become inflamed. The setback is likely to rule him out of the Laver Cup, which begins on October 26.

Federer has been training with former professional player Ivo Huenberger over the summer. They have practiced at a lower intensity in a bid to ensure Federer gradually returns to the fitness levels required to compete at the top of the sport.

The former World No 1’s only hope of returning in time to play the Basel-based tournament is that he still has over a month more of training. He must reduce the inflammation first, though.

Federer’s last major public appearance came at the most recent Wimbledon tournament, which was won by rival Novak Djokovic. The Swiss was part of the tribute to Sue Barker, who was presenting at the Championships for the final time.

“It’s great to be here with all the other champions. This court has given me my biggest wins and my biggest losses. I hope I can come back one more time,” he said on-court.

“I’ve missed it here. I knew walking out here last year, it was going to be a tough year ahead. I maybe didn’t think it was going to take this long to come back – the knee has been rough on me.”
